The Editing Software That Finally Made Me Switch From Final Cut Pro 7
It took a long time for me to step away from my editing software of choice: Final Cut Pro 7. I had been a very loyal user of the program for many, many years. I tried using Avid – didn’t like it. Tried iMovie – didn’t like it. I tried other free options and nothing could match Final Cut Pro 7. Then Apple discontinued it, merged it with iMovie and it became Final Cut Pro X. With that, it was dead to me.
I attempted to use it, but couldn’t (or wouldn’t) learn its unique ways of doing things. So I stuck with Final Cut Pro 7, as it languished with no updates or servicing. It wasn’t until about 2015 that I finally switched to Adobe Premiere Pro, and this was because I was teaching at university so I got the student discount to the Creative Cloud.
And I’ve never looked back. Adobe’s video editing software feels like the classic Final Cut Pro 7 editing style, but updated and everything made far more simple. Background encoding, multi-camera editing, really great in-built colour grading and effects plugins. There almost isn’t much of a need to use other programs such as Adobe After Effects or Audition, but if you need, you can very easily. They all dynamically link together and look very similar so the learning curve isn’t so bad.
There may be some who prefer other editing systems. Different situations may call for another platform. But for me, Premiere Pro has been great so far, with only tiny, cosmetic issues. I recommend it to everyone who asks what to edit on.
